I've heard the Voigtlander 90 is also good.Īnother thing you could look at is 75 mm lens, which might make a nice match with a 35. The only one I'd really stay away from is the 90/4 made for the CL or the Minolta ones, because I think I've read they can get funky bubbles on the glass or something. I think the one known as the thin Tele-Elmarit is supposed to be really small, but flare easily. First, the Summicron DR is heavy, and if you check Ken Rockwell’s excellent comparison of Summicron 50s, the DR weighs in at a whopping 339g, the heaviest Summicron 50mm of them all.
But, remember, the Leica 35mm Summicron when cared for will probably outlive the photographer. It sells for substantially less than later Summicron models and even its non-DR sibling which sold contemporaneously. You can find 90/2.8 Elmarit-M (the last model) for not too much, and older models for even cheaper. And for a pure sharpness comparison between the Leica Summicron 35mm at F2.0 vs the Nikon 24-70 at 35mm at F4.0, here you go.
I almost went with the one I found, but I ended up buying a used Macro Elmar 90/4 because it is collapsible, focuses closer than any other option, and is also 'optimized' for the close focus range, all things that appealed to me. This one was with the Leica 50mm f/2 Summicron-R lens modified to a Nikon F mount by Leitax, which then works with the Novoflex Nikon adapter for the E-mount on the Sony NEX-5 camera.

One of a series of test shots using the Sony NEX-5 as a camera back for Leica and Nikon lenses. It's pretty small, a tad faster, and new. Best seen in a larger size over a dark background (just click image above). He recoated one of mine and it still is less centrally sharp than a Summitar. One of the best Lens repairman around has said that on his equipement a collapsible Summicron was the sharpest Leica lens he has ever tested. This is the lens I should have kept, but I wanted a Summilux, so it was sold. You can get a new(ish) Summarit for ~$700 if you look around. In my experience, the collapsible Summicron is a somewhat strange lens. Leica 50mm f/2 Summicron Version 4: This was a great lens. I wanted newer and compact, but from what I saw, they are all pretty good.
